Doctor Nguyen Doan Cu taught the princelets in the Court of the Imperial Clan. One time, teacher Nguyen caned a lazy pupil. After having second throughts, the teacher worried and submitted to the Emperor an apology and petition for retirement. Emperor Tu Duc (1) said:
- You respect me for the discipline of court, not for my authority. If you aren't stern, you can't train children to be talents and the royalty won't have worthy peoples to succeed.
Then the Emperor gave to teacher Nguyen three more canes.
Annotation:
(1) Tu Duc: fourth emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, named Nguyen Phuc Thi or Nguyen Phuc Hong Nham, ruled from 1847 to 1883.
