The examination in the 16th year of Thien Ung Chinh Binh (1) was very particilar. This was the first examination of the Tran dynasty, opened after the victory against the Mongol invaders under the age of Emperor Tran Thai Tong (2). This examination has also marked the three highest places for the first time: Trang nguyen, Bang nhan and Tham hoa. Another thing is that the three highest passers were very young. Nguyen Hien was 14 years old, Le Van Huu (3) was 17 years old and Dang Ma La was 19 years old. The highest passers Nguyen Hien was required to learn politeness in three years before becoming mandarin.
