Responding to the Can Vuong edict

Nguyen Doan Cu retired and returned his homeland at Vu Thu (1). At the age of  64 years old, he was seriously bedridden. Heard that the Emperor Ham Nghi (2) issued the Can Vuong edict (3), he sat up immediately, called his son Doan Chi and told him:
- My fate isn’t close yet. I must accompany brothers and offsprings in the protection of homeland to respond to the Can Vuong edict.


Annotation:
(1) Vu Thu: today belong Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province.
(2) Hàm Nghi: eighth emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, named Nguyen Phuc Ung Lich, ruled from 1884 to 1885.
(3) Can Vuong edict: edict of the support for the king to fight against the French colonisation.
